Beating the Winter Blahs
Getting the winter blahs and the blues associated with them is not a myth. It is, in fact, a seasonal-type depression called SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is caused less exposure to sunlight during the winter months. Research points to a gene that causes some people to be susceptible to SAD and this includes children. SAD symptoms include not wanting to get out of bed, overeating, decreased activity, and trouble focusing. However, all is not lost until Spring. Here are some fun ideas to help beat the winter woes.
Go to the Car Wash
A drive through car wash with its whirling brushes, sprays of suds, and flashing lights can delight children and even adults. If your kids haven’t experienced one, winter is a perfect time to introduce them. A trip to the car wash with the kids cleans car, gets you out of the house, and provides a little “clean” entertainment.
COVID-19 has forced many of us to stay put for nearly a year. Spending some time outside (besides in your yard) can provide a safe change of scenery. Bundle up everyone and find a nature trail for a hike or snowshoeing. If that option isn’t available, a walk around the neighborhood offers a change in scenery that will improve moods.
A cold, winter day doesn’t lend itself to the typical summer camping experience. So why not camp in your home. Make a weekend of it by pitching the tent in the den, living room or basement. Tell scary stories, set up the sleeping bags and don’t forget the s’mores! With no campfire, you’ll have to improvise by using the oven, microwave or firing up the sterno.
Heading to the local outdoor skating park came be a fun and COVID safe activity. However, you may not have an outdoor skating facility. In that case, how about creating an indoor rink in your home? Find a hard floor (hardwood or vinyl) and section off an area. With socks or slippery slippers your kids can have a great time pretending to be skating while toasty warm.
