Smoothing Summer Transitions
With summer just on the horizon, children of all ages face a transition in seasons, routines, environments, and maybe even emotions. For some, this transition can be stressful or overwhelming after having settled into a comfortable routine throughout the rest of the year. Children might be under the care of different caregivers, navigating family vacations, or taking part in new activities like swim classes or vacation bible school. However, while children thrive on stability and consistency, proactive preparation can help make the summer transition as seamless as possible.
Maintain Consistency
Often, a major change in routine can make your child feel unprepared or disoriented, sometimes causing behavioral issues. Alternatively, maintaining consistency through the summer months in terms of bedtimes, wake-up times, scheduled meal and play times, etc. can help your child maintain a sense of normalcy! Even having small daily routines that stay predictable can help your child feel more prepared for the summer transition and better able to handle other life changes.
Outdoor Play
One of the wonderful benefits of the summer season is the opportunities for outdoor play! Nature play, beach trips, family walks, and more can help your child feel excited rather than uncertain about upcoming life transitions. More importantly, prioritizing this quality family time outdoors can help your child feel more connected and supported through summer months when their other socialization may be lessened.
Open Communication
One of the best ways to ease the transition into the summer months is to simply talk to your child about how they may be feeling or what they may be worried about. Keeping little ones in the loop about upcoming plans can additionally help ease anxieties. For kids, these changes can be more palatable when they have something to look forward to and know what they can expect!
Heaven’s Elect Christian Learning Center is committed to helping children feel safe, comfortable, and prepared for life’s transitions. Here, consistency, connection, and communication are paramount for helping parents and youth tackle summer transitions seamlessly.
Simple Ways to Encourage At-Home Learning
Much of children’s early childhood development actually happens within the home. Here your little ones pick up on social cues, develop their language abilities, engage their curiosity, and so much more. While childcare centers offer important curriculum and opportunities for socializing with peers, it’s also important to encourage well-rounded growth in home environments as well. Here are a few simple ways to encourage learning at home with your little ones:
Involve Children in Everyday Activities
One of the best (and easiest) ways to encourage at-home learning is by involving your child in everyday activities like cooking or grocery shopping. It might seem small, but these daily chores help children identify colors, learn the very basics of measuring, or even teach them how to read or follow basic instructions. Including children in these everyday tasks builds their confidence while also developing their cognitive and language abilities!
Keep Play Educational
Play is often considered children’s universal language, and kids can often learn more when they’re engaged and having fun. Matching games, block building, or even hands-on crafts can help children develop critical skills while also making learning something to look forward to. As children age and play evolves, so can learning! If your child engages in screen time, educational apps or videos are a good alternative to keep play educational.
Nurture Special Interests
As your child grows up, it’s likely they might go through different phases of interests, whether that be trains, horses, football, a specific video game, etc. Nurturing these special interests can actually be a long-term benefit to your child’s education! Encourage your little ones to read books or watch educational videos about the things they’re interested in, and they are more likely to develop their curiosity and learn in ways that feel most engaging to them. This also helps children take the lead in their own learning, which can build confidence and self-esteem in the process!
Prioritize Childcare Communication
Your child’s behaviors, interactions, and interests in a childcare setting often help to inform their activities at home, and vice versa! Prioritizing consistent communication with your little one’s childcare team or caregivers can help you learn where they are excelling and where additional at-home support may be needed.
At-home learning is so much more than just printable worksheets and packed schedules. Children learn and grow by engaging their curiosities, trying new things, and experiencing genuine and meaningful interactions with others. Heaven’s Elect Christian Learning Center is passionate about providing a safe, educational childcare environment for your little ones, while also encouraging at-home learning that builds bright, well-rounded, and confident youth.
Supporting Strong Immune Systems Through Flu Season
As temperatures and weather patterns fluctuate with spring on the horizon, flu season is in full swing. Young children are notoriously susceptible to picking up germs, sniffles, and colds, and this time of year can be especially challenging for families navigating missed school or disruptions to daily routines. While common colds are inevitable, boosting your child’s immune system and prioritizing their overall wellness is more important than ever during this season.
Prioritizing Healthy Sleep
Sleep plays an important role in your child’s physical and mental wellness year-round, but is especially important for boosting their immune system and preventing sickness! Consistent bedtime routines, getting enough sleep, and minimizing distractions like screens before bedtime all help to promote more restful nights of sleep. When children are well-rested, their bodies and immune systems are better equipped to tackle illnesses and recover quicker.
Nourishing the Body
A healthy immune system is directly linked to healthy, nutritious food like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and protein. Encouraging children to eat full, balanced meals and choose healthier snacks like cheese sticks or veggies helps ensure they receive the nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants their bodies need to stay strong and healthy. Additionally, making sure your child stays hydrated all day long, especially if they’ve been running or playing sports, helps to regulate their body temperature and keep essential body systems functioning properly.
Promoting Healthy Hygiene
Personal hygiene is one of the surest ways to avoid sickness and the spread of germs. While getting dirty, playing outside, and dropping food are inevitable for most children, it’s important to teach them (and model yourself!) healthy hygiene habits, particularly in shared spaces. Washing hands before and after eating or using the bathroom, as well as after coughing or sneezing, can help prevent the spread of illness while creating a lifelong healthy habit for your little one.
Heaven’s Elect is committed to providing a safe, thriving childcare environment where every child feels safe, seen, and heard. We know that sickness, even the common cold, can be a pesky nuisance for families at our facility, which is why we’re committed to preventing the spread of germs and keeping little ones healthy and strong while under our care. From regular and thorough disinfecting practices, to teaching the children in our care proper handwashing techniques, the team at Heaven’s Elect helps tackle cold season head-on while modeling healthy habits.
Bedtime Basics: Promoting Healthy Sleep Routines with Children
Every parent likely remembers the sleepless nights and constant tiredness of the newborn phase, and how detrimental it could be to daily activities. Unfortunately, many families continue to experience bedtime meltdowns and broken sleep schedules throughout the toddler years and beyond! Here are a few ways to help make bedtime a bit more peaceful for both you and your children.
The Importance of Healthy Sleep
Proper sleep is important at all ages, but for children in particular a healthy sleep routine can help boost critical emotional, social, and physical growth. In fact, experts at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommend at least 11 hours of sleep daily for toddlers, and at least 10 hours of sleep daily for preschoolers. When a child is well-rested they are better able to focus, regulate their emotions, communicate effectively, and manage stress. Alternatively, not getting enough sleep or having disrupted sleep can cause your child to become more irritable, unfocused, or disinterested.
Strategies for Promoting Healthy Sleep
While each child is different and may have unique sleep needs, childhood development experts highlight the importance of finding the right sleep routine and sticking to it as much as possible. Having a consistent nighttime routine, such as putting on pajamas, brushing teeth, and going to sleep at the same time every night, helps your child create a comfortable and predictable schedule that becomes easier to adapt to over time. Keeping these bedtime and wakeup routines consistent even on weekends can be especially beneficial for keeping your child regulated and well-rested.
Additionally, your child’s sleep schedule is influenced by their daily habits more than you might think. For example, children that get regular physical activity, consume caffeine and sugar in lower amounts, and are exposed to natural daylight regularly tend to have an easier time falling, and staying, asleep. Alternatively, children who are not given the opportunity to get their energy out throughout the day, or who consume sweets right before bed, might have a more difficult time fighting restlessness and getting a full night of sleep.
The environment your child sleeps in also matters tremendously. Limiting distractions as much as possible, such as turning off lights, setting a no-screen policy well before bedtime, and promoting quiet during sleeping hours, helps children get a better night of rest. Bright lights, especially close-range like on a phone, TV, or tablet, can restrict melatonin production and lead to your child having a harder time falling asleep.
The team at Heaven’s Elect is committed to fostering children’s health and wellness both during childcare hours and at home. With nutritious snacks, allotted time for outdoor play, and pre-scheduled nap times for little ones, children can build healthy sleep habits even while receiving childcare, leading to a more peaceful bedtime routine at home.
Understanding Your Child’s Language Development
One of the most exciting parts of parenting is getting to see your child grow up and learn more about themselves and their unique personality! Language development plays a crucial role in this process, and children’s communication skills often progress quickly in their early years. Here’s what you can expect as your child learns, grows, and finds their voice!
First Year
Within your child’s first year, they will typically start communicating with small coos or single-syllable sounds. During this stage, singing or reading to your little one can help them develop their sounds more quickly, and by their first birthday they may even be able to say a few simple words!
1-2 Years Old
Real communication skills begin to shine through during your child’s toddler years, though they likely will still be working on their pronunciation. During this stage in your child’s language development, you may hear them begin to say shorter sentences, ask questions, and develop a more robust vocabulary (sometimes over a hundred words!). As a parent, encouraging your child’s language learning during these ages means asking them questions in return and continuing to read with them.
3-4 Years Old
As your child progresses past the toddler stage into the preschool stage, their speech and storytelling become much clearer. You may start to hear longer sentences, and your child will likely start to use their words to express feelings, emotions, or memories. While their speech is still developing, this is an exciting stage in their language progress where people outside of the family may start to understand your little one more clearly!
4-5 Years Old
By the time your child nears kindergarten, their speech skills are typically much more advanced, showcased by complex sentences and a basic understanding of grammar. At this point, you might see your child’s sense of humor show, as well as the advancement of their social skills communicating with peers, expressing needs, or asking for clarification. As a parent, this is a great time to play word games, have your child read out loud, and engage in more meaningful conversations!
Heaven’s Elect knows that speech development is a crucial milestone in every child’s life, and the childcare team is passionate about providing a language-rich environment for your little one to thrive and grow in! Using hands-on activities, daily storytime, and modeling healthy communication skills, the Heaven’s Elect team is here to help your child find their voice with confidence.
