Interacting with peers and forming healthy bonds is an important step in your little one’s early childhood development. Even before developing strong language or conflict resolution skills, children can begin learning the basics of sharing toys or handling disagreements with each other. While forming connections and making friends may come more easily to some children than others, offering encouragement and guidance is essential for teaching healthy relationship-building skills at every age.
Emphasize Turn-Taking
Teaching your child to share and consider those around them is one of the most important steps in building early empathy and collaboration skills. Practicing give-and-take during everyday interactions helps children understand that their friends have needs and preferences just like their own. Play is an especially useful time to practice this skill and teach children how to take turns, cooperate with one another, and share decision-making.
Teach Early Boundary-Setting
Building healthy friendships also means learning how to establish and respect personal boundaries, and understanding consent is an important child safety skill at any age. Understanding boundaries begins with teaching your child about personal space, how to respect other people’s preferences, and how to speak up if they are feeling scared, uncomfortable, or unsafe. Just as importantly, children can learn to understand and respect when a friend says “no,” asks for space, or seems upset.
Introduce Children to Diverse Perspectives
Children are naturally curious, and interacting with peers with different backgrounds, personalities, and interests can help them recognize that not everyone thinks, feels, or experiences the world in the same way. Reading books about cultural differences and talking about how to respect what makes each person different and unique are important foundations for helping kids develop empathy and acceptance. These skills help kids build more positive peer relationships, especially with those outside their family or social circle.
