Making Mealtimes Manageable with Picky Eaters

Picky eating is common among young children as they develop their own tastes and food preferences, but it can also become frustrating for parents when it comes to planning meals or family dinners. Selective eating often means refusing some foods entirely, even ones that a child previously liked. Fortunately, there are practical ways that parents can introduce new foods to their young picky eaters while also encouraging a positive and curious relationship with eating.

Gradually Introduce New Foods

Picky eaters may often refuse to try foods they may not even know they dislike yet. The key is to introduce these foods slowly and in small amounts to give your child time to become accustomed to them. It can be additionally helpful to introduce new foods alongside familiar favorites so that your child feels empowered to try it over time. For example, a child may initially refuse to try broccoli, but if it is continuously offered with their favorite pasta meal, they may become more comfortable tasting or eating it.

Offer Mealtime Options

Children with selective eating habits may respond more positively to being offered options rather than feeling pressured to eat something they don’t like. Offering choices at mealtimes can encourage well-rounded eating without completely catering to your child’s strict preferences. For example, a child who doesn’t like vegetables may be more likely to at least try them if they get to choose between peas or carrots. Giving children a sense of ownership over their eating can also help ease some of the apprehension associated with unfamiliar foods, encouraging them to broaden their preferences over time.

Involve Children in Meal Prep

Giving children a hands-on role in choosing and making their food can help make unfamiliar options feel a little less scary. Age-appropriate participation can look like helping to wash or prepare produce, mixing ingredients together, picking a side dish, or even packing their own lunch. By involving your child in the meal preparation process, they often feel more empowered to try new things and feel a sense of control over what they do or don’t eat.
